Vidyasagar University, named after the renowned figure of the Indian Renaissance, Pandit Iswar Chandra Vidyasagar, has its roots in a cultural and educational movement in West Bengal, particularly in the district of Midnapore. The idea of establishing a university in the region was proposed by various organizations, including the Regional Education Association, Midnapore, led by Professor A.K. Gayen of IIT Kharagpur. The Ghani Committee, appointed by the U.G.C., also recommended the creation of a university in Midnapore due to its compact area, manageable number of colleges, and the advantageous cooperation of IIT Kharagpur.
In 1978, the Government of West Bengal decided to establish Vidyasagar University, and the U.G.C. approved the proposal. A Planning Committee was formed in March 1979 to lay down the development plans, and the Vidyasagar University Act, 1981, was passed. Professor Bhupesh Chandra Mukherjee became the first Vice Chancellor in September 1981.
Academic activities began in June 1985, when 30 colleges in the District of Midnapore were affiliated with Vidyasagar University. The main campus was inaugurated in January 1986, with classes starting in six postgraduate departments. The U.G.C. granted recognition under Section 12B of the U.G.C. Act on March 1, 1990.
As of now, the university houses 27 PG departments, with 12 in humanities and 15 in science. Additionally, 46 undergraduate colleges and 11 courses in 11 other colleges and institutes are affiliated. The university has a distinct focus, aiming not to perpetuate the traditional nature of other universities in West Bengal. The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) awarded Vidyasagar University a 3-star status. The campus features afforestation programs and picturesque surroundings, symbolizing the university's journey through various challenges.
VISION
To groom a generation of young citizens with thinking minds who will be intellectually sound, morally upright, and socially responsible.
To this end, the college provides financial help and arranges remedial classes to educate weaker sections of students so that the lamp of knowledge remains accessible to all, in keeping with the philanthropic spirit of Pandit Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar. Thus, the College envisions that the students who leave its portals should imbibe its motto "VajradapiKathoraniMruduniKusumadapi" into the very core of their being by virtue of the holistic education that they have acquired in the College. The college is committed to helping students who are neither affluent nor intellectually sound. Such students are equipped by the college with the wherewithal to compete in the global or professional sphere. The object is not to create "in-specific" rank seekers; rather, the objective lies in building students with robust character, confidence, and a strong sense of altruism and love for humanity.
MISSION
To emerge as an academically and socially vibrant place where the students are free to express their views while respecting those of others.
The college also aims to arm its students with knowledge based on a high level of pragmatic skill, social commitment, and moral as well as ethical values. It firmly believes that the purpose of education should be the development of a competent and committed human resource nourished within a profound humanistic tradition. Pursuing the mission of creating responsible citizens passionate about service, work, and academics, the college teachers keep engaging with the students through the mentorship programme to assess their strengths, weaknesses, and challenges and help them grow in all spheres of life over the span of the three years they spend at college and after, as alumni inspire the next batch of students.
